Promise Me The World … but all I want is a sandwich

Oh wow has the internet gotten ugly.

Five years ago, I used to do webpages for fun and profit. And, I don’t know, maybe I kept to my own little corner, but it seemed a lot easier back then.

2015 – Bluehost, WordPress, whack in a webpage, do my thing, add all the plugins. Schmicko!

2020 – I have money now, I can pay WordPress to do the thing properly! I get a paid account. Wait, I can’t have plugins? WTH? I check out the plans. OK, they all look like more than what I really need. But… I miss plugins. And I bought this account specifically so it could take payments. Except it turns out you can only accept certain types of payments. V E R Y L I M I T E D. Can’t I just whack in a plugin…? No. Ok, so I start looking around. I’m looking at a LOT of money for even bare minimum of what I am interested in. Suddenly playing a fortune for WordPress, and then paying for every plugin on top of that… is also very expensive.

It would probably help if I actually knew the exact shape of my webby needs for the coming year. It was a bit of an epiphany, to be honest, to realise that decisions I make now are not set in stone. I can change my mind later!

The other big stumbling block for me right now is that 5 years ago, everything did… exactly what it said it would do. Now everything wants to handle everything for me. Mailchimp wants to handle my webpage, email list, CRM, and social media. WordPress has locked everything down so tightly, I have to do quizzes in their approved system, and it also wants to handle so much more of my stuff. That I don’t need anyway, and it just overloads and confuses me. Facebook wants to handle my Instagram, and is making it more complex rather than less complex every day. I’ve never seen a user interface that seems designed to make my experience worse and more confusing. Tiktok is also bleeding at the edges, popping up in random places. I finally found a payment/download combo, which is free to use but they also want to handle my webpage and social media and…

I guess I’ll go sit in my corner and play with Grenadine for Swancon for the next 21 days and then figure it out. Do you feel overwhelmed as a creator on the internet? Let me know in the comments!
